Laser Hair Removal for Muslim Male and Female

Living in a diverse society presents both unique benefits and as well as challenges for Muslims. One of the benefits is the level of appreciation they will acquire for the Sharia due to its ability to bring about a solution for each challenge.

Islam expects Muslims to take care of themselves and look their best. Personal care and hygiene are not only expected but appreciated. The keeping of one’s body in the best appearance whether in public and at home for family is an act of worship and a source of reward. Allah's Messenger said, "To shave the pubic hair, to clip the nails and to cut the moustaches short, are characteristics of the Fitra (the original human nature as created by God)." The Prophet continued to justify the religious expectation by saying: “Allah is Beautiful, He loves beauty.” Furthermore, a daughter of 'Umar was named ‘Asiyah’ (disobedient), the Messenger of Allah re-named her 'Jamilah' (beautiful).

One of the technologies that have come about in recent years is laser hair removal which allows for a long-term removal of unwanted hair. If the laser treatment does not cause harm, then it is acceptable. As for who may perform this service, it is acceptable in areas that other people have the right to touch and see. As for the removal of pubic hair, a person if capable may do it for themselves or have the assistance of a spouse as it is not acceptable outside of this due to the Islamic stance on modesty.  Our Prophet said: Modesty is part of Iman (faith).

The clear ruling from our Prophet forbids us from such a practice. The Messenger of Allah said, "A man must not look at a man's private parts nor must a woman look at a woman's private parts; neither should two men lie naked under one cover, nor should two women lie naked under the same cover."

It is crucial to realize that Islam has put forward certain principles to guarantee privacy to protect human dignity.  God said, “O children of Adam! We have indeed sent down to you clothing to cover your shame, and (clothing) for beauty and clothing that guards (against evil), that is the best. This is of the communications of Allah that they may be mindful. O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts.”

If a woman due to health or lack of ability, is unable to remove her pubic hair by herself, she may have permanent laser treatment performed by a professional instead of going repeatedly to a person to have hair removed. This should be kept within the scope of necessity and should not be used as an excuse for everyone.

Being mindful of the Islamic objective around modesty can lead to an appreciation for the Islamic guidelines.
